The New LIFE SCHOOL

The New LIFE School provides quality education for middle and high school aged students whose special needs cannot be met in a mainstream classroom setting. It offers counseling and specialized educational programs that help each student to realize his or her full potential.

A Dream Comes True

In 2006, Lutheran Social Services of New York opened The New LIFE School-a 12-month, intermediate level, publicly funded educational program for students with special needs in grades 5 through 8. The school’s motto educating children in time to make a difference is lived out every day.

The agency will expand its educational offerings with the opening of The New LIFE School-High School. This program will extend educational services to high school students with academic, emotional, and behavioral disturbances.

Services

Fully approved by the New York State Department of Education, The New LIFE School fills the void in the educational system for students with special needs whose academic requirements cannot be met in a public school setting. These students are referred to the school by the New York City Department of Education.

The New LIFE School is staffed by dedicated and experienced professionals, with advanced credentials in the field of special education. The TNLS staff has been trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), which has sharpened staff communication skills with students and provided a deeper understanding of student behavior and challenges. Patience and understanding are significant strengths of TNLS staff and help build positive attitudes within the school and community.

What is The New Life School?

The New LIFE School is a state funded special education program designed for students ages 10 to 21, with various academic and-or behavioral disabilities, who are enrolled in grades 5 to 12. Our curriculum is modeled on the New York State learning standards, which focus on the following general curriculum content areas.

How Are Students Referred?

The New LIFE School is approved and licensed by the New York State Education Department. It is contracted by the New York City Department of Education to provide services for New York City students. Students are referred by the NYC Department of Education’s Central Based Support Team (CBST). Students are identified by local committees on special education as having learning, behavioral and/or developmental disabilities that require a smaller, non-public school setting. Our students come from throughout the five boroughs of New York City, with special consideration for those in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.

New Life High School Receives Grant Funding from the ELCA Foundation Lutheran Services for Children Endowment Fund

Lutheran Social Services of New York through its New LIFE High School has developed plans for a new and innovative curriculum integrated arts education pilot that focuses on curriculum innovation and supports the special needs of students enrolled in the New LIFE High School.

Over the period of three years, students, faculty and community volunteer mentors will have the opportunity to participate and play an integral role in the planned comprehensive creative arts education pilot that has received funding from the ELCA Lutheran Services for Children Endowment Fund.

It is our hope that the proposed New LIFE School: Learning through the Arts Initiative will serve as a model that we will be able to integrate into our entire school curriculum and other educational settings.
